When our dogs are injured, need surgery or have a life-threatening illness, we all want blood to be available. However, the pet population of Portland is growing rapidly and shortages of canine blood products exceed even those in human medicine. NWVS has established a blood bank in order to meet the increasing demands of the pet community’s critically ill. |
 |
When dogs are chosen to become members of the blood donor program, they receive free yearly physical exams and bloodwork, free yearly testing for infectious disease, blood typing and yearly heartworm prevention. Most important, you and your dog will receive our immeasurable gratitude for your time and willingness to become “lifesavers.” |
Dogs that are good candidates for blood donation have a friendly temperament, are 55 pounds or over and are from 1-8 years old. They need to be up-to-date on their vaccinations, in good physical condition, and have no prior history of receiving transfusions or being pregnant. To see if your dog can be a blood donor, please complete the information below and a NWVS Critical Care Blood Bank team member will contact you.
